Cranberry Bog Discussion: River ecology, dams and dam removal options

This discussion by Nick Nelson, Fluvial Geomorphologist, will provide a better understanding of river ecology in association with dams like the earthen dam at the Carlisle Cranberry Bog. The speaker will also discuss various options regarding dams and his experience with dams at other cranberry bogs to optimize the river ecology, fish migration, reduce long term costs and address recreation needs such as walking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking and cross country skiing.

About the speaker: Nick has 19 years of experience as a fluvial geomorphologist and manages Inter-Fluve's Northeast region. He works on all phases of river restoration projects around the country, leading project management, construction oversight, topographic surveying, and restoration design. His work with Inter-Fluve has focused on dam removal, urban channel restoration/rehabilitation planning and design, and cranberry bog eco-restoration design. Nick has taught at Northeastern University, the University of Minnesota, and for the last 10 years the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Nick grew up on Cape Cod and has been honored to work on dozens of dam removal and river, wetland, and estuary restoration and recovery projects throughout Massachusetts for nearly two decades.
